After resigning from broadsheet, The Philippine Daily Inquirer, and being politely let go from the web news site Rappler.com, I considered retiring my Pugad Baboy cartoon strip. The second to the last story arc I made (The Returnee) was supposed to tidy things up and some readers caught up to it. I received emails saying they're on to me and jokingly declared that they would riot if retire when I'm still in good shape to continue.

I remembered the time when Bill Watterson retired from cartooning. I thought, "How dare he retire when I already have an emotional investment on Calvin and Hobbes?". Do I want my readers to feel the same way? Although those who hate me thinks that my fans should be as attached to Pugad Baboy as Lance Armstrong is attached to his missing testicle. They said my strip is cancer and it should be taken out.

And so I plotted to make a spin off that would be new to millenials but still have a connection to Pugad Baboy: Before I made a move to The Philippine Star, my last story arc was Dugo ng Shinobi - the ending of which puts the characters 33 years fter the events in Pugad Baboy. Where Dugo ng Shinobi ends, Blood of the Shinobi begins.
